Couples Massage 101: What Is It, The Benefits, And What to Expect

There are few things as wonderful as getting a massage. The relaxing ambiance, the soft kneading slowly ebbing away your sore muscles or kinks, the inevitable feeling of complete relaxation. The only thing better than a massage is a massage with someone you love. Getting a couples massage can be a great bonding experience out of which both parties come out happy, healthy, glowing, and above all, absolutely calm and relaxed.

What is a Couples Massage?

A couples massage is a shared experience designed for two people where each person involved receives a relaxing massage from a therapist.  (In this case it will be one massage therapist massaging two people.) The ambiance tends to be relaxing, dark, and calm in order to make the most out of the experience.

Why Get a Couples Massage And Not Go Solo? (The Benefits of a Couples Massage)

Even though going solo is an amazing experience when it comes to getting a massage, there are a few things that make couples massages extra special.

  • You’re trying something new. Even though trying new things might be scary, doing it with someone you love (be it a partner, friend, or family member), can make you feel braver. After all, you’re doing it together!

  • It lowers stress and anxiety levels. Who isn’t relaxed after a massage?

  • It encourages intimacy. Couples massages imply having a private room all to yourselves. And given the state of vulnerability both of you are in is an amazing way to create a bond and encourage intimacy. Whether it’s your best friend or the love of your life, you will have something to talk about when you walk out the door.

  • And as we already mentioned before, it’s a bonding experience. Trust us - you will have more in common after a couples massage than you ever did before entering. And it will give you something to talk about over dinner or drinks.

Once the massage starts, you can expect total and complete relaxation! Lay back, breathe the scented perfumes, enjoy the dim lighting, and let go of everything you have been carrying around. Concentrate on enjoying the moment (we guarantee it won’t be hard to do!).

Release of “feel good” chemicals

Massages can positively affect the electrical activity in your brain and the chemical processes of your body. During a massage, endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin are released, all of which are colloquially referred to as “feel good” chemicals. So you will literally walk out happier than when you entered.

Reduction in stress and depression

Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, is significantly reduced when you get a massage. Add to it the fact that your body is already producing extra endorphins, dopamine, etc., and you’re in for a very relaxing time!

As humans, we naturally respond to the human touch of massage and generate a state of calmness.  So when you feel like you are floating away into space from all the relaxation, you’re not imagining it! It’s all part of the massage experience.

Increased blood flow

Getting a massage increases the blood flow to various joints, which in turn improves circulation, reduces aches and cramps, and leaves you feeling refreshed. Also, the stimulation of the body’s lubricants can increase your overall flexibility!

Aside from these, massages can also help improve posture and even reduce headaches! So a massage will definitely have you and your partner feeling happy, healthy, and fully relaxed.

The Access Consciousness Bars

30/60 minutes: $45/$75

The Access Bars is an amazing treatment that involves gently touching 32 points on your head. This supposedly releases anything that doesn't allow you to receive. These points (aka bars) contain all the thoughts, ideas, beliefs, emotions, and considerations that you have stored in any lifetime.  This is an opportunity for you to let go of everything!

I know, it sounds out there but hang in there as it is explained more...

Each Access Bars session can release limitations in the area of your life that corresponds with the specific bar being touched. This is an incredibly nurturing and relaxing process, undoing limitation in all aspects of your life that ou are willing to change.

How much of your life do you spend doing rather than receiving?

Have you noticed that your life is not yet what you would like it to be? You could have everything you desire (and even greater!) if you are willing to receive lots more and maybe do a little less! Receiving The Bars will allow this to begin to show up for you.

How does it work?

Access Bars has assisted thousands of people to change many aspects of their body and their life including sleep, health and weight, money, sex and relationships, anxiety, stress and so much more.

At worst, you will feel like you have just had a phenomenal massage. At best your whole life can change into something greater with total ease.

Some compare the brain to a computer and The Bars treatment to a disk defragment. The bars (points on the head) correspond to different areas of the brain (the computer files) that relate to aspects of everyday life, such as joy, creativity, money, control, creating connections, calmness or experiencing gratitude etc. We carry our own limiting thoughts, beliefs, emotions and patterns in these areas (like junk files, or spam) based on judgement absorbed from society, culture family, friends and personal experience. Ideas about right and wrong, good and bad, interfere with accepting life as it is and making changes that empower us.  We may even be well aware of how these judgement draw us off-center, away from our inherent connection to wholeness and oneness.

When an Access Bars practitioner touches the bars on a person's head, the electrical charge in the brain which holds these fabricated judgement is dispersed (i.e.the junk files deleted!). Patterns and 'programs' we've taken on cause us to react to life on autopilot with unconscious resistance to the very experiences we most long for.  Once cleared, we become free to function again with clarity and awareness, receiving who we truly are without fear and obstruction, and open to entirely new vistas of possibility.

Studies have shown that The Bars treatment slows brainwaves down to a theta state allowing behavioral patterns and childhood perspectives to surface and be released, and a greater state of

Here are the top 12 amazing health benefits Access Bars has to offer:

2. Improved manageability of depressive and anxious tendencies.

8. Greater mental clarity, motivation and problem-solving capacity.

9. Identify and transform negative self-talk.

10. Release the unconscious stories that keep you from having what you want.

11. Be more generative as you clear blocks to receiving - improve money flow.

12. Create change with health, weight, relationship, stress and so much more.

Cranial Sacral Therapy

60 minutes: $75

Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful technique that is effective in releasing neck pain, back pain, and mental stress (among other things). It does this by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull. Developed by physician William Sutherland, this therapy provides a very soothing and relaxing healing experience.

What is Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST)?

Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on treatment that may provide relief from a variety of symptoms including headaches, neck pain and side effects of cancer treatment among many others.

CST uses a light touch to examine membranes and movement of fluids in and around the central nervous system. Relieving tension in the central nervous system promotes a feeling of well-being by eliminating pain and boosting health and immunity.

The focus of CST is a gentle plac ement of hands to assist release of the body’s connective tissue, or “fascia.” Fascia (Latin word for “band”) is a covering found throughout the body including organs, glands, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, brain and spinal cord. This covering forms a body-wide connective network. CST is based on the idea that the body is interrelated at all levels.

CST is thought to improve efficiency of biological processes through boosting inherent self-regulation, self-correction and self-healing. The therapy can be used successfully with children and adults.

What conditions may Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) help?

  • Chronic pain.
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Migraine headache.
  • Complex regional pain syndrome.
  • Fascial adhesions.
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • Neuralgia.
  • Neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Temporo-mandibular joint syndrome.
  • Stroke.
  • Post-concussion syndrome.
  • Speech impairment.
  • Epilepsy.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

60 minutes: $75

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy aims to gently and rhythmically move the lymph through the body, especially swollen areas of the body, relieving pressure and enhancing the functioning of the immune system. As both a preventative and remedial technique, MLD can be used for a wide range of purposes including faster recovery from injury, reduction of swelling and discomfort from pregnancy, and strengthened resistance to illness.

Gentle and noninvasive

Manual lymphatic drainage uses a light, repetitive skin stretching movement that is very specific: the skin is stretched in a specific direction and sequence to help speed the rate at which the lymphatic fluid reaches the appropriate lymph node groups for filtration and decongestion of the tissues.

The massage therapist’s role in oncology care is to help speed the decrease of lymphatic congestion that often occurs after treatment. In addition, full-body MLD stimulates the entire lymphatic system, which is highly beneficial to the immune system.

Manual lymphatic drainage is both gentle and noninvasive, and as long as major contraindications have been ruled out, can often be administered without needing to identify the cause of the swelling.

For example, a patient may come in with a very swollen arm following rotator cuff surgery. Her past history may show lymph node removal due to breast cancer on the same side. A properly trained Certified Lymphatic Therapist (CLT) can treat the edema with the appropriate MLD protocol without needing to pinpoint the cause, as long as contraindications are not present. The same is true for lower extremity edemas, even if it is unclear whether the cause is past oncology care or general venous aging and venous stasis.

Graston Technique Specialist (GTS)

Graston Technique® (GT) is a unique, evidence-based form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively and efficiently address soft tissue lesions and fascial restrictions resulting in improved patient outcomes.GT uses specially designed stainless steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver an effective means of manual therapy. The use of GT instruments, when combined with appropriate therapeutic exercise, leads to the restoration of pain-free movement and function. The instruments also are used diagnostically to assess the kinetic chain, in an efficient manner using the principles of regional interdependence.

Empirical and anecdotal evidence exists for the following physiological effects of GT:

  • Separates and breaks down collagen cross-links, and splays and stretches connective tissue and muscle fibers
  • Facilitates reflex changes in the chronic muscle holding pattern (inhibition of abnormal tone/guarding leading to pain reduction via improved sensory input)
  • Alters/inhibits spinal reflex activity (facilitated segment)
  • Increases the rate and amount of blood flow to and from the area (angiogenesis vs. immediate local increases in blood flow)
  • Increases cellular activity in the region, including fibroblasts and mast cells
  • Increases histamine response secondary to mast cell activity

Scar tissue limits range of motion due its negative impact on sensory motor firing rates and frequencies. Abnormal sensory inputs perpetuate a dysfunctional cycle of nervous system sensitization, pain and dysfunctional movement/motor output. GT offers a positive method of manual therapy that interrupts and breaks this cycle of pain and dysfunctional movement.

When viewed under a microscope, normal tissue can be organized in a couple of different fashions: dense, regular elongated fibers running in the same direction, such as tendons and ligaments; or dense and loose, irregular with fibers running in multiple directions. In either instance, when tissue is damaged, it will often heal in a fibrotic, haphazard manner and may appear radio-dense under diagnostic ultrasound. The tissue may show thickening, irregular organization or less precise margins as compared to non-injured tissues, which results in a restricted range of motion and, very often, pain and functional limitations.

GT instruments are used first to enhance the clinician's ability to detect soft tissue lesions, scar tissue/fibrosis or restrictions in the affected areas as determined from a comprehensive examination of movement and function. Skilled clinicians use the stainless steel instruments to comb over and "catch" on fibrotic tissue, which immediately identifies the areas of restriction. Once the tissue has been identified, the instruments are then used to address and treat the abnormal tissue. When GT is combined with appropriate therapeutic exercises and activities, pain free function is often restored.

GT is not designed to be painful or cause excessive bruising. Occasionally, as with any form of manual therapy and depending on the patient's condition, minor discomfort during the procedure and some bruising afterward may be experienced. GT clinicians are trained to recognize these symptoms and adjust treatment intensity to minimize their occurrence, while realizing the benefits of the technique. GT does not need to be considered "painful" to be effective. Please inform your clinician if you are experiencing discomfort anytime during treatment.

Whether the treatment is injury specific or applied within a maintenance program, the Graston Technique® protocol is the same. It includes a brief warm-up exercise, Graston Technique® treatment, followed by stretching, strengthening and ice (only when subacute inflammation is of concern). Based on the patient's condition, as determined by the clinician, GT can be used in conjunction with other modalities including laser or electrical muscle stimulation.

Depending upon the nature of the injury or maintenance program, patients usually receive 1-2 treatments per week during the span of 4-5 weeks. Most patients have a positive response by the 3rd or 4th treatment. The average number of GT sessions per episode of care averages between 6-12 for more chronic conditions.

GT-trained clinicians use GT instruments to effectively and efficiently address soft tissue lesions and fascial restrictions while treating acute and chronic conditions, including:

  • Achilles Tendinitis/osis (ankle pain)
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (wrist pain)
  • Cervicothoracic Sprain/Strain (neck pain)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Lateral Epicondylitis/osis (tennis elbow)
  • Lumbosacral Sprain/Strain (back pain)
  • Medial Epicondylitis/osis (golfer's elbow)
  • Myofascial Pain Syndromes
  • Patellofemoral Disorders (knee pain)
  • Plantar Fasciitis/osis (foot pain)
  • Post surgeries such as joint replacements, RTC repairs (once post-surgical protocol allows for soft tissue mobilization/manual therapy)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinitis/osis (shoulder pain)
  • Scar Tissue/post-surgical scars (once completely closed)
  • Patients demonstrating central and/or peripheral sensitization (only used in light stroking/brushing mode to desensitize)
  • Shin Splints
  • Trigger Finger
  • Women's Health (post-mastectomy and Caesarean scarring)

Graston Technique® can be used to treat any movement system dysfunction that has been determined to have a soft tissue component.
